14th August is of great pride to Pakistanis because it marks the Independence Day. For celebration, the people of Pakistan hold ceremonies, festivities, fire-work parades and cultural events all across the map of Pakistan. On this day, to mark the independence day of Pakistan, the people hoist the flag of green and white on houses, buildings, monuments and historical sites. All of this is done to signify 14th august in the calendars of Pakistanis, who now enjoy an independent homeland; The Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
In 1947, 73 years from now, Quaid-e-Azam (Great Leader) Muhammad Ali Jinnah was successful in giving the Muslims of British India a separate homeland. The Two-Nation-Theory was promoted by Jinnah, backed by Muslim League and accepted by the British Parliament. Our forefathers migrated to this new land and it was declared to be the land for the Muslims, thus it is named as such; The Islamic Republic of Pakistan. Ideally, the Independence Day act should have been peacefully done but violent clashes and mass casualties took place which resulted in the misplacement of 15 million people. Furthermore, this religious conflict and difference is exactly the reason Muslims needed a separate homeland from the Hindus.
Interestingly, Quaid-e-Azam delivered in his first broadcast to the nation that
“August 15 is the birthday of the independent and sovereign state of Pakistan. It marks the fulfillment of the destiny of the Muslim nation which made great sacrifices in the past few years to have its homeland."
However, due to Mountbatten’s administration of the independence oath to Jinnah took place on 14th August in soon-to-be Pakistan and 15th August in India, thus, subsequently, 14th August is adopted as the Independence Day in Pakistan.
All over Pakistan, the historical monuments and government official buildings are lit up in lights and ornaments themed with the National Independence Day. The public officials, who include the President and the Prime Minister as well, are invited to the official festivities. Furthermore, the main festivity takes place in the heart of the capital, Islamabad, where subsequently, the flag raising ceremony takes place on the parliament house and the presidency. Followed by, an epic 31-Guns salute in the capital. Telecast speeches and statements are delivered by the prime minister, the president and the officials of government and political parties, aired all over Pakistan on the 14th August.
There is another significant event that takes place on Independence Day which is the Change of Guards, in which the sentries that are deployed at various monumental & official sites are relieved from their sentry duties and replaced by new eager and patriotic sentries. This display of patriotism can be witnessed by the public that is gathered to see this event take place
The citizens of Pakistan proudly raise the flags on their residences and light up their houses with ornaments and candles. The streets are filled with hustle as the eve of 14th August; people crowd the market place to buy occasional accessories to celebrate the theme of Independence Day.
Fireworks, Henna, and flags are all that you will see people carry, on this day! Mesmerizing fireworks fill up the night sky as soon as the clock strikes 12 all across Pakistan. The people sing the National Anthem of Pakistan and pay homage to the martyrs who died fighting for our country’s independence. Parades are set across the whole map, with special televised programs and stalls can be seen on every nook of the street!
The Independence Day is a remarkable reminder to the people of Pakistan and to the people of the world, that this new mass of land was not discovered, it was not claimed territory but it was fought for by the blood and sweat of our forefathers. Pakistan was built on the foundation of Muslims of the South Asia that recognized a need to be a separate nation and furthermore, has to be a republic with an Islamic ideology. On this day, every political party is aligned on the focus of bringing prosperity to our country and our Islamic ideology. Additionally, this day is a symbolic message to the people and nations who we fought & defended against for our Pakistan; our nation is a force to be reckoned with and not to be underestimated.
